Preformed vitamin A (retinol/retinyl palmitate) is immediately active, your body uses it directly. Beta-carotene is a provitamin A that must be converted to retinol. Conversion is inefficient (6:1 ratio) and varies by genetics, up to 45% of people are poor converters. For therapeutic use, preformed retinol or retinyl palmitate is preferred.
The tolerable upper limit is 10,000 IU/day of preformed vitamin A for adults. Most supplements provide 3,000-5,000 IU. Cod liver oil provides natural vitamin A + D together.
