The essentials

A closer look.

Thorne's Curcumin Phytosome delivers curcumin complexed with phosphatidylcholine, a phytosome technology designed to significantly enhance absorption compared to standard curcumin extracts. The sustained-release delivery further extends the compound's presence over time, supporting joint comfort, a balanced inflammatory response, and antioxidant activity. A practical option for adults seeking consistent curcumin intake throughout the day.

Why It's Worth Considering: The phytosome form addresses curcumin's well-known bioavailability challenges, while the sustained-release matrix distinguishes this from conventional curcumin capsules, a combination characteristic of Thorne's practitioner-grade formulation standards.

INTERACTIONS
Curcumin has been shown to reduce the therapeutic efficacy of cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan) in animal studies. In vitro research revealed that curcumin decreased camptothecin-induced death of cultured breast cancer cells. Curcumin might also interfere with the absorption and efficacy of the chemotherapy drug irinotecan, used to treat colon cancer. The concurrent use of curcumin with these agents should be avoided.

More category questions

Is turmeric the same as curcumin?

No. Turmeric is the whole spice (root of Curcuma longa). Curcumin is the active compound within turmeric, comprising only 2-3% of the root. A supplement standardized to '95% curcuminoids' contains 30-50x more active compound than raw turmeric powder. You cannot get a therapeutic dose from cooking with turmeric.

Why is curcumin bioavailability so important?

Standard curcumin has only 2-3% bioavailability — meaning 97% passes through you unused. Enhanced formulations (Meriva, Theracurmin, BCM-95) increase absorption 7-29x. Without enhanced bioavailability, you'd need to take massive doses (8-10g) to match what 500mg of Meriva delivers.

Can curcumin replace ibuprofen?

Clinical trials show curcumin (500mg Meriva, 2x/day) is comparable to ibuprofen for knee osteoarthritis pain with fewer GI side effects. However, curcumin works through a different mechanism (NF-kB vs COX) and takes 2-4 weeks to reach full effect, unlike ibuprofen's immediate action. Many people use curcumin for maintenance and ibuprofen for acute flares.

Does curcumin interact with medications?

Curcumin has mild blood-thinning properties and may interact with warfarin, aspirin, and other anticoagulants. It may also enhance the effects of diabetes medications (lowering blood sugar further) and reduce iron absorption. Consult your physician if you're on blood thinners, diabetes medications, or chemotherapy.

How much curcumin should I take?

Depends on the formulation. Meriva: 500mg 2x/day. Theracurmin: 90-180mg/day. BCM-95: 500mg 2x/day. Standard 95% extract: 1500mg/day with piperine. These are NOT interchangeable doses — each formulation has different bioavailability. Check the specific product's clinical study dose.
